I had a lot of goals for this weekend. I was going to (re)organize the little boys' room so my husband could work on it and we could actually put the little boys in there. I was going to declutter the kitchen counters and island -- again. I was going to clean off the counter in the laundry room in the hopes of having somewhere to put a personal copying machine. I was going to put in the order for winter coats and snow boots before it snowed. (Oops, missed that one again. Had a snow shower Saturday afternoon.)
Instead, I woke up Saturday feeling pretty rotten and wondering if I didn't have a sinus infection. So instead of doing actual work, I:
- Learned to finger knit (For more complicated finger knitting which I have not learned yet, see here and here) and taught Katydid how, too.
- Made good on my promise to get Katydid a hamster. Said hamster is now comfortably residenced in Katydid's room. She named him Avery, because she liked the sound of "the Avery Prize" in Anne of Green Gables. Katydid is now a nervous wreck, worrying that we will do something wrong caring for the hamster. Also, the hamster does not seem to have read the part of the hamster book that says, "Hamsters designate different areas of their cages for sleep, food, water, and the bathroom." No, this hamster just lumps 'em all together. If he could move the water bottle, he probably would.
- Had doughnuts and Kool-aid at a social hour at church with many other homeschooling families. It is so nice to have finally found a community to belong to. Afterwards, when we went out for lunch and the waitress asked us, "Are you going to have any more kids?" the good feelings from talking to other large families just carried us right through. When the waitress left, my husband turned to me and said, "Maybe we should tell her we're going to vote on it." All in favor of more kids, say aye!
- Finally remembered to pick up ice cream spoons at Wal-Mart. I think mine are smaller than Alice's, but I am excited about making even tiny saints.
- Also remembered to pick up some more masculine-looking beads for Gareth to do some beading alongside Katydid, as he requested the other day. (Magnetic hematite beads are way cool.)
- Ate birthday cake, drank tea, folded some laundry, and watched a History Channel documentary on Egypt with Gareth.
I think that sometimes a little sinus infection can be a blessing. Would I have stopped to do any of these things this weekend if I hadn't woken up on Saturday feeling a little wobbly and under the weather? I doubt that I would have sat down long enough to make a chain of yarn, and I might have been too busy to go with the family to get Katydid's hamster.
I'm feeling better tonight, so maybe it wasn't a sinus infection after all. But I'm thankful for the down time I spent this weekend, even if my kitchen counter looks as if it needs an archaeologist!
What a blessed weekend!
