It's not just for the birds.
We also seem to be supporting a squirrel population that could take over a small country. I'm sure there are probably mice, too, but thankfully, I haven't seen any. And there are quite a few birds...
Our Early Spring Birdlist
These are the birds we've seen so far this spring:
- junco
- fox sparrow
- chipping sparrow
- another sparrow I haven't asked Katydid about yet (she's our resident bird expert)
- black-capped chickadee
- downy woodpecker, male and female
- male hairy woodpecker
- pileated woodpecker
- male yellow-bellied sapsucker
- male and female cardinal
- blue jay
- brown-headed cowbird, male and female
- American crow
- goldfinch (they're still a dirty yellow)
- white-breasted nuthatch
- red-breasted nuthatch
- male and female house finch
- male and female purple finch
- male ruby-crowned kinglet
- starling
- American robin
- mourning dove
Last year we also saw these birds, which we hope to see again:
- red-winged blackbird (the blackbirds are back, but I haven't seen any in the yard yet)
- rose-breasted grosbeak
- Baltimore oriole (too cold yet)
- bobolink
- ruby-throated hummingbird (too cold for them still!)
Last year at this time, we were all wrapped up in birds, too. Katydid loves this time of year. This year she wants to teach chickadees to eat out of her hand and spends hours outside bird-watching, even when it's cold. Her birthday is coming up soon, and shhh, don't tell her, but she's getting more bird-related presents this year, too...
I love that picture of your daughter!
We finally are getting a squirrel baffle - I hope it works. We were getting tired of feeding mostly squirrels which were scaring all the birds away!
And we saw our first really *bright* goldfinch this week, which was exciting - hopefully in your neck of the woods soon!
