How does our garden grow?
Like this:
And like this:
(Please pardon the weeds, which are taking over in between potato plants -- bottom right corner -- and all around the raised beds in the upper right corner.)
We have patty-pan squash with names like "Flying Saucer" in several stages...
(This is Yellow Scalloped and it's just a baby.)
And the pumpkin vine Farmerboy started in a cup with a wet paper towel back in March is growing quite large... although it doesn't seem to have developed any pumpkins, alas.
(We have some other pumpkin vines which are growing pumpkins, though -- unlike last year!!!)
Some of our corn should be ready soon...
(Farmerboy is checking out the corn he planted here. If you're wondering what his shirt says, it says: "When I grow up, I'm going to drive my Daddy's tractor"... a bit of wishful thinking on both their parts, I think. ;-))
We've also got beans coming in now. This year we planted Royal Burgundy beans in addition to the more standard Tendercrop. (Both varieties are bush beans. For some reason we didn't get around to planting pole beans this year, and our harvest is down because the deer ate half the plants after they came up. Deer are not my favorite animals.)
This is what the Royal Burgundy beans look like on the plant:
It's a bit fuzzy, but their flowers are really gorgeous. When you snap the beans, they look like this:
And when you cook them, they completely lose their purple color and turn green. They're supposed to be good for cool, wet soils... which would be ours around the end of May.
We're also thick into zucchini season. This is what happens when you don't check your zucchini plants for a few days:
But then you can teach your kids to help you peel and grate (and call it Montessori work) and you can make a bunch of these:
And many, many loaves of zucchini bread as well. (You will be very tired and hot at the end of the day, but it will be worth it.)
Oh, do share that zucchini bread recipe.
